About the Journal
GeoHuman: People, Place, and Power is a regularly published, open-access international scholarly journal. Presented by CV Bumi Spasial in a strategic partnership with the Geographic Information Science Study Program, UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, this journal serves as a platform to explore the critical intersections between human geography, geospatial technologies (GIS), and dimensions of power.
Focus and Scope
GeoHuman: People, Place, and Power is an international scholarly journal that publishes theoretically informed, methodologically rigorous, and empirically grounded research at the intersection of human geography, geospatial technologies, and critical studies of power. The journal examines how social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental processes shape spatial relations, and how geographical spaces, places, and landscapes influence human experiences, institutions, and the distribution of power.
The journal welcomes research that advances geographical theory, develops spatial methodologies, or provides new empirical insights into the production, governance, representation, and contestation of space. Contributions may draw on qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis and modeling, critical cartography, participatory mapping, ethnography, and other approaches appropriate to the research questions.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Social and Environmental Justice: Spatial inequalities, environmental injustice, uneven development, marginalization, and the geographical dimensions of social exclusion.
- Political Ecology and Resource Governance: Power relations surrounding land, natural resources, environmental change, conservation, and resource-related conflicts.
- Critical GIS and Cartography: The politics of spatial data, mapping practices, counter-mapping, participatory GIS, and the critical application of geospatial technologies.
- Urban and Rural Transformations: Urban governance, spatial planning, gentrification, rural restructuring, migration, and changing socio-spatial relations.
- Territory, Borders, and Geopolitics: Territorial identities, bordering practices, spatial control, political boundaries, and the geographical organization of power.
- Digital Geographies: Digital spatialities, platform-mediated interactions, geospatial surveillance, digital representations of place, and inequalities associated with emerging technologies.
- Identity, Place, and Everyday Geographies: Place-making, belonging, territorial stigma, cultural landscapes, and the intersections of gender, class, race, ethnicity, and identity in spatial experiences.
GeoHuman considers original research articles, critical literature reviews, and empirically grounded case studies that make a clear contribution to geographical knowledge. Submissions should articulate their theoretical or conceptual relevance, demonstrate methodological transparency, and situate their findings within broader scholarly debates. Studies focused on a particular locality are welcome when they offer insights that extend beyond the immediate study area.

Sponsorship and Publishing Model
GeoHuman is published by CV Bumi Spasial and is the result of an academic collaboration with the Geographic Information Science Study Program, UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. This synergistic partnership between a professional publisher and an academic institution aims to promote inclusive and impactful knowledge dissemination. The journal operates on a non-profit basis and is supported by both institutions to maintain its diamond open access model (free for both readers and authors).
Peer Review Process
GeoHuman upholds the highest standards of academic integrity through a rigorous double-blind peer-review process.
- Initial Check: Upon submission, all manuscripts undergo an initial check by the editorial team for suitability, adherence to scope, and formatting.
- Double-Blind Review: Manuscripts that pass the initial check are sent to at least two independent, expert reviewers. The identities of both the authors and the reviewers are concealed from each other.
- Decision: The editorial board makes a final decision based on the reviewers' recommendations, which may be: Accept, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, or Reject.
This process ensures that all published research is original, significant, and methodologically sound.
History
GeoHuman was founded in 2025 by CV Bumi Spasial and the Geographic Information Science Study Program, UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi to address a growing need for a dedicated platform that critically engages with the intersection of spatial analysis and power dynamics. Recognizing the transformative potential of geospatial technologies in social science research, the journal was established to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and publish methodologically innovative work that makes a tangible impact on both academia and society.
